Mittelformat ist alles was mehr als 3x4cm Bildrahmengröße unterstützt und kleiner als Großformat ist, d.h. kleiner als 9x12cm bzw. 4x5 Zoll.
Also sind 4x4cm- und 4x6.5cm-Kameras für Typ 127 Rollfilm, 4,5x6cm-, 6x6cm-, 6x7cm-, und 6x9cm-Rollfilmkameras für Typ 120 oder 220 Rollfilm, und 6,5x9cm Planfilmkameras allesamt Mittelformatkameras, während 3x4cm-Kameras für Typ 127 Rollfilm zum Kleinbildformat zählen, auch wenn sie nicht Kleinbildfilm verwenden.
